What To Expect - Family Photography Session

So, you’re considering a family photo session, but you’re not sure what exactly that entails. In this blog post I’ll be giving you a quick overview of my process and what to expect during your photo session.

I like to have a quick video chat at some point before our session so that we at least know what each other look like and we’re not standing around at our chosen location like we’re awkwardly waiting for a first date. But trust me, even without this video chat to prep us, we’ll be great friends by the end of our session.

Your family photo session will typically last about 60-75 minutes. There are a lot of factors that go into this, but this is my general average. We’ll work on a location that works for everyone involved, be it a park that your family loves to visit frequently, your own backyard, or some of the best locations in Denver for family photos.

This little girl wasn’t the biggest smiler, but she’s cute anyways!

A lot of parents worry that their kids aren’t going to want to smile or won’t look ‘picture-perfect’. Let me tell you, that’s the wrong way to go about it. While I do have lots of experience with getting kids out of their shell and having a great time during our session, sometimes kids just don’t want to smile, and we shouldn’t force it.

I am not a fan of just yelling out ‘Say Cheese!” to everybody and hoping for the best. If your son or daughter doesn’t want to smile, it’s okay. We are capturing them as they are at this time. Along those same lines, I ask that you don’t discipline your children during our session. This hardly ever results in good photos, and the frustration will clearly show on your faces.

Let’s let the kids be kids. If you want perfectly posed photos, I may not be the photographer for you.

I will place you guys in many different groupings, including the whole family together, the kids individually, each child with one parent at a time, and couples shots of the parents (because let’s be real, you guys havent had professional photos taken of you since your wedding, am I right?). Getting these different groupings will help fill out your gallery with unique photos that tell your family’s story in the best way possible.

I will have many more specific blog posts going over what to wear, what happens after your session, and many more, but this has just been a general overview of what to expect for your family photos.

If you feel like you connect with my work and process and you’re ready to schedule your session, I’d love to hear from you. Click here to fill out my contact form or email me directly at cam@cameronmartinez.com. Can’t wait to meet your family.
